Hey Kate,
Your point on how discussions can be impersonal and less individualized when it spreads outside of a community/ traditional educational circle is quite interesting! This is something I didn’t consider but I completely agree with you.
As you mentioned, people’s thoughts and opinions are often dictated by what’s societally accepted. In some cases, I feel like mainstream media sets certain standards in a way that holds people accountable for their words/ actions. However, I do think having people challenge certain standards and having respectful debates is intellectually stimulating and engaging. These days I view cancel culture as being a dominant presence in social media in a way that makes it hard for people to challenge these “norms” or stray away from what’s traditionally accepted. For me it’s important to give people room to speak their mind in a respectful manner while also holding people accountable if what they say is harmful. What are your thoughts?
Thank you for sharing.
Sincerely,
Kathy
