Community Contribution: Blog 5- Feedback #2

Hey Kate,

Your point on how discussions can be impersonal and less individualized when it spreads outside of a community/ traditional educational circle is quite interesting! This is something I didn’t consider but I completely agree with you.

As you mentioned, people’s thoughts and opinions are often dictated by what’s societally accepted. In some cases, I feel like mainstream media sets certain standards in a way that holds people accountable for their words/ actions. However, I do think having people challenge certain standards and having respectful debates is intellectually stimulating and engaging. These days I view cancel culture as being a dominant presence in social media in a way that makes it hard for people to challenge these ā€œnormsā€ or stray away from what’s traditionally accepted. For me it’s important to give people room to speak their mind in a respectful manner while also holding people accountable if what they say is harmful. What are your thoughts?

Thank you for sharing.

Sincerely,

Kathy
